Discovering the Story Behind British Wool at The Great Yorkshire Show

Few events celebrate British farming quite like The Great Yorkshire Show.

Every summer it brings together farmers, makers, rural businesses and visitors who share a passion for Britain's countryside and agricultural heritage. For us, it also provides the perfect opportunity to talk about one of the country's most remarkable natural fibres—British wool.

This year's show was particularly memorable as we exhibited within the British Wool marquee, surrounded by organisations and producers dedicated to championing one of Britain's oldest and most versatile materials.

It was an inspiring few days spent talking to customers, meeting sheep farmers and sharing the story behind our 100% British wool boot socks.

More Than Just a Pair of Socks

One of the questions we hear most often is remarkably simple:

"What makes British wool so different?"

The answer begins long before the yarn is spun.

Every breed of sheep produces wool with its own distinctive characteristics. Some fleeces are exceptionally soft, others are naturally robust, while many sit somewhere in between. Understanding those differences is essential when creating products designed for specific purposes.

For boot socks, selecting the right wool is every bit as important as the knitting itself.

The Fascinating Diversity of British Wool

A highlight of the show was seeing the British Wool breed classification display, sometimes affectionately described as a "periodic table" of British sheep breeds.

Rather than treating wool as a single material, the display demonstrates the remarkable diversity found across Britain's sheep population.

Each breed produces fibres with unique characteristics, helping manufacturers choose the most suitable wool for everything from luxury apparel to upholstery, insulation and technical textiles.

It's a powerful reminder that British wool is far more complex than many people realise.

Why We Choose Medium Grade British Wool

Every product requires the right balance of performance.

For our boot socks, we use British Wool's Medium grade, selected because it offers an ideal combination of durability, resilience and everyday comfort.

Medium-grade wool provides:

  • Reliable insulation in changing weather.
  • Breathable comfort throughout the day.
  • Excellent durability for walking and outdoor wear.
  • Natural resilience that helps socks maintain their performance over time.

It strikes a balance between softness and strength, making it particularly well suited to life inside walking boots and country footwear.

A Blend of Britain's Finest Sheep Breeds

The yarn used in our socks isn't sourced from a single breed.

Instead, it's created from carefully selected fleeces that share complementary characteristics, bringing together wool from a range of traditional British sheep breeds.

This thoughtful blending process helps produce a yarn that performs consistently while celebrating the extraordinary diversity of British farming.

Every pair of socks carries a connection to landscapes, farms and generations of sheep farming across the United Kingdom.

Conversations That Matter

One of the greatest pleasures of attending agricultural shows is speaking directly with the people who wear our products.

Throughout the event we met walkers, farmers, dog owners, countryside enthusiasts and visitors who shared their own experiences of British wool.

Many were surprised to discover how much science, craftsmanship and careful fibre selection goes into creating something as seemingly simple as a pair of boot socks.

Those conversations remind us why natural materials continue to matter.

Celebrating British Farming

British wool represents far more than a raw material.

It supports farming families, helps maintain rural landscapes and reflects generations of knowledge passed from one generation to the next.

Choosing products made from British wool helps celebrate that heritage while supporting one of Britain's most important renewable natural resources.

It's something we're proud to champion in every pair of socks we produce.

Until Next Year

The Great Yorkshire Show is always one of the highlights of our calendar.

Not simply because it gives us an opportunity to showcase our collection, but because it brings together everyone who shares a passion for British farming, craftsmanship and the countryside.

To everyone who visited our stand, asked questions or shared stories about their own adventures in British wool, thank you.

We look forward to seeing many of you again next year—and until then, we hope every walk, country escape and outdoor adventure is made just a little more comfortable by the remarkable qualities of British wool.
